VA Disability Percentage:
Why 50 + 50 = 80

Understanding how the VA calculates your combined rating is the key to knowing exactly where you stand—and how close you are to the next tier.

The "Whole Person" Concept

The VA assumes 100% efficiency. A 50% rating leaves 50%. A second 50% takes half of the remaining — adding 25%. Together: 80%. This is the foundation of VA math.

Student Veteran
SCO Checklist

Your guide to Yellow Ribbon, Priority Registration, and maximizing the Post-9/11 GI Bill®. Every student veteran should walk into the SCO office with this checklist in hand.

1

Verify Your SCO Contact

Every campus has a School Certifying Official (SCO). Find yours through the VA GI Bill Comparison Tool →. Confirm their direct email and office hours before the semester starts.

2

Yellow Ribbon Program Eligibility

If you're 100% Post-9/11 GI Bill® eligible (or a Fry Scholar), ask your SCO if the school participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program. This covers tuition above the annual cap at private and out-of-state schools.

3

Request Priority Registration

Many schools offer priority registration to veterans. Ask your SCO: "Does this school give veterans priority enrollment?". Getting the classes you need before they fill up is a retention game-changer.

4

Submit Enrollment Certification

Your SCO must certify your enrollment each semester to the VA. Do this before the add/drop deadline. Late certification = late housing allowance. Use VA Form 22-1999 →.

5

Transcripts & Credit Transfer

Request your Joint Services Transcript (JST) at jst.doded.mil. Ask the SCO which military credits transfer toward your degree. Don't retake what you've already mastered.

6

Know Your VR&E Option

Veteran Readiness & Employment (Chapter 31) can supplement or replace GI Bill® benefits. If you have a service-connected disability, ask about VR&E eligibility → before tapping your GI Bill®.
